Dr. Frank Brettschneider graduated from Michigan State University, where he earned his MD with a focus on osteopathic medicine. Today, Dr. Frank Brettschneider is an otolaryngologist and the president of a private practice in Port Huron, Michigan. Otolaryngology is a medical specialty in which patients are treated for ailments affecting structures of the head and neck that are related to the ear, nose, and throat. Although this area of medicine has a long history in the United States, an article published in early 2016 indicates that it is beginning to gain notice in the United Arab Emirates due to the increasing prevalence of head and neck cancer among citizens. Experts attribute the increased development of cancer in areas such as the brain, cheek, tongue, and thyroid to several factors, including the consumption of tobacco and the popular betel nut. Harvested from Areca palm trees, the nuts release stimulating properties when chewed, but leave many small cuts in the mouth. Through these cuts, cancer-causing chemicals can easily enter the body. Medical professionals in the UAE hope to improve access to early intervention services and oral cancer screenings in order to increase the chances of survival within the population.
